Simplifying Dinnertimes

In the tapestry of childhood, what stands out is not the splashy, blow-out trip to Disneyland but the common threads that run throughout and repeat: family dinners, nature walks, reading together at bedtime, Saturday morning pancakes.

Simplifying Dinnertimes-

It can be predictable for children when you create simple themes for each night eg. Monday Italian Night, Tuesday Soup, Wednesday Rice etc. Everyone knows what to expect and this brings a sense of safety and knowing. Remember that in having rhythms it can also make stepping out of them a novelty Eg. “I know it’s soup night but we’re going to make pizza for Sarah’s birthday”. Having evening meals together can root the family with consistency and connection, meaning older children are still able to feel comfortable and confident as well as younger children knowing what to expect.

A special treat while celebrating Halloween with friends and family

Talking about a wide range of subjects together during evening meals is grounding for children and adults and helps to allow you into the children’s world.

We often play a simple game of rose, thorne and bud. Each family member talks about what was the rose (best part) of their day, the thorne (worst part) and bud (what they are most looking forwards to) it’s a beautiful way to connect with what’s on everyone’s hearts in a light way and our family love playing this game.
